Titre : POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER AFTER DISCHARGE FROM AN ACUTE MEDICAL UNIT Type de document : thèse Auteurs : LAHMER, Basma, Auteur Année de publication : 2019 Langues : Français (fre) Mots-clés : Post-traumatic stress disorder the quality of life Acute medical unit Résumé : Introduction:
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) occurring after acute illness is increasingly documented in the literature.
Our study aims to determine the risk factors of PTSD in patients of an acute medical unit (AMU) after their discharge and the impact this has on their quality of life.
Methods and measures:
It was a prospective, analytical study conducted over a period of two months at the AMU of the Ibn Sina Hospital Center.
We collected sociodemographic and clinical data, patient's medical history, and evaluated the symptoms of anxiety and depression during their stay using the HADS. The SF-12 assessed the quality of life at six weeks and three months while the severity of PTSD symptoms was assessed with IES-R at three months.
Results :
- 141 patients were included in our study with a mean age of 49.74 ± 17.8.
- 17.6% of patients have significant symptomatology of PTSD at 3 months
- Living alone but with family in close proximity -14.1(-25.22;-2.97) 0.01, a longer stay in the AMU -0.37(-0.71;-0.03)0.03, Lower HADS-anxiety Score during the stay in the AMU -1.43(0.61;2.26)0.001 were found to be predictive of less severe PTSD symptoms.
- Patients who scored higher in the IES-R had a lower score in the SF-12 mental component.
Conclusion :
The management of patients at risk during their hospitalization, especially those with anxious symptomatology, is necessary to reduce the severity of the symptoms of post-traumatic stress syndrome after discharge and thus ensure a better quality of life.
