Crisis management in anesthesia and intensive care requires both technical proficiency and non-technical skills (NTS) such as communication, leadership, and stress management. Despite the critical role of NTS in ensuring patient safety and effective crisis resolution, current training programs in Morocco predominantly focus on technical skills. This study evaluates the importance of NTS in anesthesia crisis management and proposes a framework for integrating NTS training into the Moroccan context.
Methods
A prospective, descriptive study was conducted at the University Hospital Center IBN SINA Rabat from July 2023 to July 2024. The study involved 100 participants between Nurse Anesthetists and Physician Anesthesiologists. Data were collected through questionnaires assessing participants' knowledge and experiences with NTS and crisis management. Additionally, an interprofessional simulation-based training program was implemented, followed by a satisfaction survey.
Results
The majority of participants (91%) had encountered crisis situations, with 95% successfully managing them using NTS. Key NTS identified included situational awareness, leadership, communication, and teamwork. However, 41% of participants lacked formal knowledge of NTS, and 80% were unfamiliar with Crisis Resource Management (CRM) concepts. The simulation-based training program received high satisfaction ratings, with participants expressing a strong preference for practical workshops and simulations over theoretical courses.
Discussion
The study highlights a significant gap in NTS training among Moroccan anesthesia professionals. International practices demonstrate the efficacy of integrating NTS into training programs through simulations and structured modules. The positive feedback from the initial training program indicates a readiness among Moroccan professionals to adopt similar methods. | Numéro (Thèse ou Mémoire) : | M3192024 | Président : | Mamoun FAROUDY | Directeur : | Ali KETTANI | Juge : | Jawad TADILI | Juge : | Zakaria BELKHADIR | Juge : | Mohammed MOUHAJIR |
